Minnesota New Country School Elementary, located in Henderson, Minn., opened its doors to students for the first time on August 26, 2013. The school is an expansion of the Minnesota New Country School High School, which was created in 1994 and has an enrollment of about 150 students. The Elementary has about 85 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through sixth grades from 13 surrounding communities within a 45-mile radius.
As a tuition-free public charter school, MNCS receives state funding and provides bus transportation to the communities it serves.
MNCS follows a project-based curriculum where students each receive an individualized learning plan. While there is still a focus on basic skills such as math, reading and writing, MNCS teachers also focus heavily on 1) Environmental experiential learning; 2) Project-based learning; 3) Responsive classroom; 4) Character education; and 5) Technology.
